You will find our nursing home in beautiful Rhodes, in the Ixia area, close to the center of Rhodes, the airport, the beach and Ialyssos. Rhodes has a long and impressive history; it’s a place where the strong mediaeval aspect blends with the traditional Greek one. It is also an island with great natural beauty: the lovely beaches face the pine woods on the mountainsides; the mountain villages overlook the seaside towns; and the archaeological sites, the mediaeval monuments and the cosmopolitan resorts arranged in the traditional style all conspire to make the popularity of this destination so hard to resist, even to a demanding traveller. This Mediterranean gem of an island boasts a centuries-old history: a turbulent past full of unexpected turns and twists of fate. It flourished during the 4th c. BC; this is when the famous Colossus of Rhodes, a gigantic statue sculpted by Charis from Lindos, Rhodes, who was a student of Lysippos, a master sculptor at the time. The history of this island is a rich one, as each conqueror left their strong mark on it. The City of Rhodes

There is something special about the island’s capital: its mediaeval and modern character have blended to create one of the most beautiful towns of the world. It was founded in 408 BC and it consists of the fortified mediaeval (old) town, and the new town which includes older, neoclassical and modern buildings.

The mediaeval town has been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites list and it was built in a semicircle around the main harbour. Stroll about its picturesque alleys and along the renowned Street of the Knights, which was restored to the exact shape and size it had in the Middle Ages. At the time, the houses of members of the Order of the Knights of St. John used to line the street. Visit Castello, the 14th c. Palace of the Grand Master, which is one of the first edifices built by the knights in the old town. See also the imposing Clock Tower, built by Fehti Pasha in 1857, which offers wonderful views to the old town. Visit also the Archaeological Museum and the Byzantine Museum, each housed at the former Hospital of the Knights, and at Panagia tis Nikis Church, respectively. You will admire the impressive finds and heritage items which bear proof to the island’s rich history.

Outside the city walls lies the new town, with some really impressive buildings dating to the period of Italian Rule on the island, such as Nomarchia (bearing a strong resemblance to the Doge’s Palace in Venice) – today the South Aegean Region’s Office, the Post Office, the Town Hall, the National Theatre, and the Church of the Annunciation. Go for a walk in Mandraki, the small harbour graced by two statues of deer; see also the nearby marina, the Windmills, and St. Nicholas’ Lighthouse. Visit the Aquarium at the city’s northernmost tip; the interior has been shaped like an underwater cave and you’ll see marine species endemic to the Aegean Sea. In the south side of the town, Rodini is an amazing park where peacocks live; stroll along the paths that wind their way past pine & cypress trees, and streams. Rodini is reputed to have been the location of the ancient School of Rhetoric of Rhodes, where renowned personalities received their education, such as Julius Caesar and Cicero. Weather and climate of Rhodes

In Rhodes, the climate is Mediterranean, with mild and rainy winters, and hot and sunny summers. The average temperature in January and February is 12 °C (53.5 °F), that of August is 27 °C (80.5 °F).

Rainfall:

Rainfall amounts to 700 millimetres (27.5 inches) per year, and is concentrated from October to March; the rains often occur in the form of thunderstorms, and sometimes can be abundant. In summer, basically it never rains. Here is the average precipitation.

The Winter on Rhodes

Winter, from December to mid-March, is mild: daytime temperatures hover about 15/17 °C (59/63 °F). The rains are quite frequent, but there are also sunny days. Sometimes it can get a little cold: lows can drop to about 3/5 °C (37/41 °F), and highs can remain about 7/10 °C (45/50 °F). Wind can increase the feeling of cold. In the plains, substantially it never snows (sometimes you can see the snow falling, but it does not accumulate on the ground), while on inland hills, which reach 1,200 metres (3,900 feet), sometimes it can snow.

Spring on Rhodes

Spring, from mid-March to May, is mild, and becomes progressively warmer and sunnier, and less rainy.

Summer on Rhodes

Summer, from June to mid-September, is hot, quite muggy and sunny. The Meltemi, the wind from the north-west, blows from mid-May, cooling the air, but with lower intensity than in the central islands of the Aegean Sea, such as Mykonos or Naxos. In addition, sometimes there are some periods of intense heat, with maximum temperatures about 35 °C (95 °F).

Autumn on Rhodes

Autumn, from mid-September to November, is pleasantly warm at the beginning, then it gradually becomes milder, and also more rainy.
